High School Student with Master Tech Dreams gets 4Rivers Experience

Building the Future: Gaby Yanez Explores Her Dreams at 4Rivers Equipment
The future of the heavy equipment industry is bright, and Gabriela "Gaby" Yanez is proof. A senior at Horizon High School and a student at the FutureForward at Washington Square program, Gaby recently visited our Commerce City location for an immersive look at the career she is determined to pursue: becoming a master technician at 4Rivers Equipment.
From Car Work to Heavy Iron
Gaby’s journey into the world of mechanics began at home, working on cars with her father. Her interest quickly expanded into semi-trucks, but her true passion ignited when she discovered the complexity and power of heavy machinery.
"My goal as a diesel tech is to work here. It started off with working with my dad on cars, and then I went into semis. But I think heavy equipment is a little bit more interesting." — Gaby Yanez
During her visit in April, Gaby received a comprehensive tour of the Commerce City facility, meeting the people who make our "Working Partnership" possible, including our management, sales, parts, and service teams.
Hands-On Experience: "Playing with Dirt"
For a "tech-in-training" like Gaby, the highlight of the day was moving from the shop floor to the operator’s seat. Under the guidance of our veteran technicians, she had the opportunity to operate several pieces of John Deere equipment in the yard.
- Expanding Horizons: Gaby’s visit allowed her to see how her current studies at FutureForward translate into a professional environment.
- Passion in Action: Whether she was learning about engine diagnostics or "playing with dirt" in the yard, Gaby’s enthusiasm for the trade was undeniable.
- Career Pathing: By meeting our technicians, Gaby saw firsthand the path from an entry-level student to a master technician—a journey supported by mentors like Jimmy Atencio and Mike Delk.
The FutureForward Connection
Gaby’s involvement in the FutureForward at Washington Square program is a critical step in her career. Programs like these, alongside our partnerships with the Community College of Aurora (CAST) and San Juan College, are essential for preparing the next generation of skilled labor.
At 4Rivers, we are committed to being a "Working Partner" for students like Gaby. We believe that by providing early access to technology and mentorship, we can help ambitious students transition seamlessly from high school to high-paying, rewarding careers in the diesel and heavy equipment sectors.
Common Questions About Starting a Career as a Technician (FAQ)
What is the "FutureForward" program?
FutureForward is a career and technical education (CTE) initiative that provides high school students with hands-on training in high-demand fields like diesel mechanics, construction, and engineering. 4Rivers proudly supports these programs to help build a local talent pipeline.
How can a high school student get an "inside look" like Gaby did?
We love hosting ambitious students! If you are a student or a teacher interested in a facility tour or learning more about the industry, [contact your local 4Rivers Equipment branch] to discuss potential opportunities.
What are the steps to becoming a Master Technician at 4Rivers?
- Foundational Education: Participate in a CTE program like FutureForward or a diesel tech program at a community college.
- Internship: Apply for a 4Rivers internship to gain "on-the-iron" experience.
- Continuous Learning: Once hired, technicians go through the Certified Dealer Instructor (CDI) program led by experts like Jimmy Atencio to reach Tier II, Tier III, and eventually Master Technician status.
Why choose heavy equipment over automotive or semi-trucks?
As Gaby noted, heavy equipment offers unique challenges. You aren't just working on engines; you are mastering complex hydraulics, GPS-integrated grade control systems (SmartGrade™), and massive planetary gear sets.
We wish Gaby the absolute best as she finishes her senior year! Her drive to "learn everything and expand her horizons" is exactly the spirit that has kept 4Rivers thriving for nearly 100 years. We look forward to seeing her—and the next generation of technicians—back in our shops soon.
