4Rivers and Partner Cal Sidwell Attend National Western Stock Show

A Legacy of Leadership: 4Rivers Equipment at the National Western Stock Show
The National Western Stock Show (NWSS) is more than just a Colorado tradition; it is a sixteen-day celebration of agriculture, grit, and the next generation of industry leaders. This year, 4Rivers Equipment was proud to do more than just showcase John Deere iron—we stepped into the show ring as partners with local junior exhibitor Cal Sidwell.
Supporting the Next Generation: The "Partner Experience"
Our journey with Cal began in November at the Colorado FFA Meat & Greet, where 4Rivers won the bid for a unique "partner experience." This allowed us to follow Cal’s progress as he prepared three lambs—Parker, Cael, and Keegan—for the Junior Market Lamb Show on January 16th.
Cal, a standout athlete from Gill, Colorado, who recently celebrated his 100th high school wrestling win, brought that same competitive discipline to his livestock preparation.
The Daily Grind of a Champion
Preparing a lamb for a nationally recognized show like the NWSS requires a level of dedication that mirrors a professional athlete’s training schedule. Cal’s routine included:
- Nutrition: Precisely timed feedings at 7:30 AM and 5:30 PM.
- Conditioning: Rigorous exercise sessions to ensure the animals were in peak physical form.
- Grooming: Washing and conditioning leg hair to meet show standards.
- Showmanship: 15-minute daily practice sessions with each lamb to ensure they remained calm and responsive under the bright lights of the show ring.
Values That Build a Future: Responsibility and Hard Work
For Cal, 2025 marked his final year in the Junior category. Over nine years of competing at the NWSS, he has learned lessons that extend far beyond the barn.
“4-H teaches you so much,” Cal says. “The importance of responsibility and hard work; it’s something that’s hard to grasp until you’ve shown before.”
At 4Rivers, these are the same values we look for in our FutureForward interns and our award-winning technicians. The discipline required to manage livestock is the same discipline required to maintain a John Deere 9520 scraper or lead a project like the Grand Junction High School rebuild.
Community and Camaraderie
With nearly 700,000 visitors attending the NWSS annually, the event serves as a massive family reunion for the Western agricultural community. Cal noted that the sense of camaraderie is his favorite part—navigating the grounds is slow because you are constantly stopping to catch up with friends and mentors.
4Rivers is honored to be a "Working Partner" in this community. Whether we are supporting the Big Dig for pediatric cancer, partnering with San Juan College, or backing individual exhibitors like Cal, our mission remains to enhance the lives of those who build and feed our world.
Common Questions About 4-H and Livestock Showing (FAQ)

4-H and FFA (Future Farmers of America) are youth organizations that focus on leadership, citizenship, and life skills through hands-on learning, often centered around agriculture and livestock.
How does 4Rivers support local youth in agriculture?
Beyond auction bidding and partner experiences, we offer scholarships, internship programs like FutureForward, and technical training partnerships with colleges like CCA and San Juan College to help students transition from 4-H/FFA into professional careers.
Why is the National Western Stock Show so significant?
Established in 1906, it is one of the oldest and largest indoor stock shows in the world. For exhibitors like Cal, it represents the "Super Bowl" of livestock showing, where the best in the nation compete for top honors and scholarships.
